Stress Fracture Update3

Posted by jodi in Portland Marathon Training 2006 (Sunday July 23, 2006 at 6:17 pm)

I am completing my second week on crutches for my stress fracture, and while the first two days I thought my shoulders and underarms would carry permanent pain for eternity, I found that my upper body grew strong quickly! My arms feels more toned and my pubic ramus feels much better from not bearing weight on it. 8)

I plan to use them for a few more days and then go off of them, likely later this week. At that point I am also going to begin biking the mile and a half to work each day – nothing huge, but just a fun, environmentally-friendly way to get to work.

Speaking of environmentally-friendly ways to get to work, one of my colleagues got into a wreck when we were post-call the other day after a sleepless night on call. I used the opportunity to encourage her to ride the electric trolley bus that runs from her home on Queen Anne to Harborview, and on our next call night, she excitedly told me she had, indeed, taken the bus! One more person working against global warming.

  1. Jodi-

Came upon your blog while randomly looking up information on the injury I was just dealt, stress fracture of the pubic ramus. I run Division One Cross Country for the University at Buffalo, and I’ve been spending my summer in Pittsburgh training and taking classes at UPitt. It was a crushing blow when the doctor said “stress fracture”. I’ve never been injured before, and something like this seems to be a rare and sticky situation, especially in men. I’m starting physical therapy today, and hopefully doing some cross training. Although, I have felt pain in my left pelvic region when aquajogging and biking, so that’s not too promising. The case may vary person to person, but the doctor told me to expect 8-12 weeks for full healing. Just wanted to say hang in there, because I know how hard it can be to deal with injury.

  2. You might want to consider reading the book Chi Running. This could help you prevent running injuries.

  3. Jodi-

I came upon your blog while doing research on my recent injury- stress fracture of the right pubic ramus. I am curious how you are doing now and how long it took you to heal? Also how long before you could run again. I was training on a treadmill as you were and was running intervals when I had the exact pain as you did and thought I strained my groin/hamstring. Bone scan proved to be a stress fracture instead. Any help or advice you can provide would be great. I’m curious did swimming bother your injury? I have been trying to swim w/out kicking and it seems to be ok….
